Birds in Fountain Pen
Daily sketchbook practice
A while back, I ordered a bottle of Noodler’s Polar Brown ink and got a bonus fountain pen. And what a lovely gift that fountain pen has turned out to be. Using it has completely refreshed my sketching practice.
I love doing timed sketches like the ones below. The linework is so much more expressive when I push myself to sketch quickly.
Sometimes I do a single-species study, like these Belted Kingfishers. The one taking a nose dive makes me smile.
If I’m tired or feeling less inspired, I just draw flying birds. For some reason, that kind of sketching feels very relaxing.

Those sketches are so beautiful! I love that ink too! I got it for sketching outside in below freezing weather but haven’t used it for that purpose yet. Your post has inspired me to do that!
Lovely birds, Tara! Fun to see how the different amounts of time impact your art. It makes me think I should try this with my writing of posts. Sometimes a quick deadline invites quick thinking.
