This Finch is not a Bird
A comic about my dog
I started drawing comics because of my dog, Finch. He’s such a big part of my life and we spend a lot of time together. But to be honest, our relationship wasn’t always pleasant.
For a long time, Finch wouldn’t go on walks — he went on sits.
His first “walk” as a puppy was to the end of our very short driveway. That’s where he sat down and refused to move. After a week or so of this, he consented to walk down the street for a few yards where he would sit down. I found this behavior extremely frustrating. I never figured out why he didn’t want to walk in our neighborhood, but eventually I did finally find someplace he enjoyed.
One of the things I love most about this comic is the moment of tenderness between my husband and me in the first panel of the lowermost tier. This is part of what I enjoy about drawing comics. I create images and then they affect me in ways I don’t expect. In this one, I see my husband’s love for me and his patience with our puppy, a patience I didn’t have at the time.
