Western Tanager
Combining pencil with digital color
The migrants are returning to Western Oregon and soon the Western Tanagers will be arriving from their winter homes. In honor of their return, I present to you this illustration of a male Western Tanager.
I drew the bird on Stonehenge Hot Press 100% cotton paper using a mechanical pencil. After completing the drawing, I scanned it at 300 dpi and imported the file to Procreate. There, I used Lisa Glanz’s AquaReal2 Watercolor Brushes to add the color. These brushes give remarkable effects and with the paper textures, do a fine job of emulating analog artwork.
